PHP on System i & Workshops
Speaker - Michael SANDBERG, IBM Senior Accredited IT Specialist.
Michael Sandberg is a technical consultant working for IBM ISV
Business Strategy and Enablement (BSE), located in Rochester Minnesota
USA. For the past six years, he has been involved in supporting
System i solution providers as they enhance and innovate their applications.
As part of this work, he has accumulated technical expertise in
the WDHT (IBM WebFacing Deployment Tool with HATS Technology), PHP
(PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor), and other technologies that focus
on application innovation for the System i platform.
Day 1 / Tuesday 13 March 2007
9:00 to 9:30 Welcome Coffee
9:30 to 10:50 Introduction to PHP and Zend for i5/OS
This session is an introduction to PHP on System i and the products
required to support the environment. The first topic to be discussed
will be PHP; what it is, what can be accomplished with PHP, and
it's positioning among competing technologies. The second topic
will be an introduction to Zend and the Zend for i5/OS environment.
The final topic will be a discussion on why System i for PHP.
10:50 to 11:10 Coffee break
11:10 to 12:30 Installation and Administration of Zend for i5/OS
(PHP)
Zend for i5/OS is the set of products that supports PHP on the
System i. This session will cover how to obtain & install Zend Core
for i5/OS and Zend Studio for i5/OS. Administration and Troubleshooting
of the environment will also be discussed.
12:30 to 13:30 Lunch
13:30 to 14:50 Developing PHP applications for System i
Developing PHP applications for System i covers a range of topics
associate with PHP application development. The opening topic will
be a short review of the System i Developer Roadmap and how PHP
fits. Following will be an introduction to the PHP language and
its syntax and how PHP can be used in quality application development
architecture. The last set of topics covered is the PHP Toolkit
for System i APIs with basic syntax examples through Zend Studio
for i5/OS.
14:50 to 15:10 Coffee break
15:10 to 16:30 System i PHP Security, Globalization, and Porting
considerations
PHP on System i is a new environment and such demands careful consideration
on a number of topics. This session will cover an analysis of security
of a default PHP environment and how to make it more secure. At
a higher level globalization and porting considerations will be
discussed.
Day 2 - Wednesday 14 March 2007 - Hands on workshop

9:30 to 12:30 - PHP Development Labs
13:30 to 16:30 - Identical second session
This sequence of labs covers troubleshooting the deployed environment,
Zend Studio for i5/OS for PHP programming, Utilizing the PHP Toolkit
for System i APIs, and using the Zend Studio for i5/OS debugger
capability. While familiarity with web environments, PHP, and the
System i would be useful, none are needed to complete these labs.
NB: This is not a PHP language programming course.
